On Thursday last, the 23rd. instant, the Annual Sermon for these two venerable societies of the Church of England, was preached in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, by the Rev. Thomas Woodward, M.A., Rector of Mullingar,—the attendance on the occasion was better than usual, including our respected new representative H. Whitmore, Esq. and his lady,—Lady Louisa Whitmore and her family,—The collection amounted to £20 a considerable increase on the amount collected last year. It is to be regretted that so few of the inhabitants of the town generally attend on these occasions, their sanction and support would be very valuable and could not be better bestowed.
The first of these annual sermons was preached 30 years ago, in April, 1822, by the late Venerable Archdeacon Vickers, who, till the day of his death, continued to be the steady and most liberal supporter of the two societies. The amount collected has varied considerably in different years.
The largest collection was made when the sermon was preached, by the late Honourable and Right Rev. Dr. Grey, Lord Bishop of Hereford, on the 3rd. September, 1834, it amounted to £39. 19s.
