Police Reports
DRUNKENNESS.—R Morias, John Blunt, John Piper, William Rogers, and Robert Webb, were severally charged by P. C. Dovey, with being drunk on Sunday morning last; fined 5s. and 9s. costs. Edward Henly, labourer, was charged with a similar offence; committed to prison for 1 month, in default of finding two sureties of £10 each to be of good behavior for that period.
Thomas Brown, Carpet weaver, was charged with being drunk on Sunday last.—It appeared from the evidence, that in this case police constable Dovey had used considerable violence in conveying defendant to prison. The defendant said that Dovey struck him down twice, twisted his arm, and bumped his head on the stones.—Dovey did not deny using the violence complained of, and the Mayor said he thought the police had no right to use such force, the man’s face evidently bore the appearance of having received several blows, and he hoped that the police would be more careful for the future.
